Formatting of Kindle Books: a Brief Tutorial
Publisher: Kindle Direct Publishing
Author(s): Nikolai Shevchuk

** Updated in May 2012 **
** Information on the new Kindle Format 8 **

Please read the free sample before downloading this ebook. You can down-
load and read this book for free and you will have to pay only if you find the
text useful (copy and paste the links into your browser):

forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/servlet/JiveServlet/download/13-9978-187378-2384/formattingofkindlebooks.zip.001

and

forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/servlet/JiveServlet/download/13-9978-187378-2385/formattingofkindlebooks.zip.002

(You will need a free program called "HJSplit" to combine the two parts. No-
te that Internet Explorer will try to change the extension of the first file,
while saving it to your computer.)

This document was written for the lay audience and outlines the steps nec-
essary for creation of a full-featured, professionally formatted electronic
book for the Amazon.com Kindle platform. It is possible to do some chang-
es to your Word manuscript and upload it to Kindle Direct Publishing within
half an hour, but you are likely to discover later that your ebook has many
annoying little problems that need fixing in HTML code. Quality formatting is
likely to take several days or longer. After you read this short manual, you
may decide to pay several hundred bucks to a professional to do the HTML
editing, although this manual will show you how to do it yourself. Please
keep in mind that the vast majority of self-published ebooks do not sell and
the formatting expenses may never pay off.

Although the proposed approach is most suitable for Windows PC users who
have Microsoft Word, Mac users and people who do not have Word can read
my KDP forum posts on how to use Calibre or HTML only to create Kindle
books:

forums.kindledirectpublishing.com/kdpforums/thread.jspa?threadID=9978

Most of the book's content is also available in that link (without pictures). In
the book, readers will learn how to:
  • create a fully functional "Go to" menu (table of contents, cover, and
    beginning)
  • embed a high-quality image to create a full-screen, native cover of a
    Kindle book
  • use different fonts in your Kindle book
  • create a logical table of contents (NCX) that will enable the use of the
5-way button on a Kindle device (to skip through sections in your
    ebook)
  • edit HTML code of the book to achieve a desired format
  • convert your Kindle ebook to the NookBook format and put it up for
sale on the Barnes & Noble website
  • and more...
In addition, the document contains an HTML template for a Kindle book.

The C++ Standard Library: A Tutorial and Reference (2nd Edition)
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
Author(s): Nicolai M. Josuttis

The Best-Selling C++ Resource

Now Updated for C++11

The C++ standard library provides a set of common classes and interfaces that greatly extend the core C++ language. The library, however, is not self-explanatory. To make full use of its components?and to benefit from their power?you need a resource that does far more than list the classes and their functions.

The C++ Standard Library: A Tutorial and Reference, Second Edition, describes this library as now incorporated into the new ANSI/ISO C++ language standard (C++11). The book provides comprehensive documentation of each library component, including an introduction to its purpose and design; clearly written explanations of complex concepts; the practical programming details needed for effective use; traps and pitfalls; the exact signature and definition of the most important classes and functions; and numerous examples of working code. The book focuses in particular on the Standard Template Library (STL), examining containers, iterators, function objects, and STL algorithms.

The book covers all the new C++11 library components, including

  • Concurrency
  • Fractional arithmetic
  • Clocks and timers
  • Tuples
  • New STL containers
  • New STL algorithms
  • New smart pointers
  • New locale facets
  • Random numbers and distributions
  • Type traits and utilities
  • Regular expressions

The book also examines the new C++ programming style and its effect on the standard library, including lambdas, range-based for loops, move semantics, and variadic templates.

An accompanying Web site, including source code, can be found at www.cppstdlib.com.

     Data Analysis: A Bayesian Tutorial
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Author(s): Devinderjit Sivia, John Skilling

Statistics lectures have been a source of much bewilderment and frustration for generations of students. This book attempts to remedy the situation by expounding a logical and unified approach to the whole subject of data analysis.

This text is intended as a tutorial guide for senior undergraduates and research students in science and engineering. After explaining the basic principles of Bayesian probability theory, their use is illustrated with a variety of examples ranging from elementary parameter estimation to image processing. Other topics covered include reliability analysis, multivariate optimization, least-squares and maximum likelihood, error-propagation, hypothesis testing, maximum entropy and experimental design.

The Second Edition of this successful tutorial book contains a new chapter on extensions to the ubiquitous least-squares procedure, allowing for the straightforward handling of outliers and unknown correlated noise, and a cutting-edge contribution from John Skilling on a novel numerical technique for Bayesian computation called 'nested sampling'.

The book is very, very different to any other computer book you have ever read. The Smart Method provides an entirely new and better way to master advanced Excel features. Here?s just four of the many ways in which the book is unique:

  • This book won?t waste your time by teaching basic Excel skills that you already know. All of that material is covered already in our beginner?s Essential Skills book. By assuming that you are already able to use Excel?s basic features, far more ground can be covered.
  • Instruction is logically structured into sessions and lessons. While this makes the book ideal for self-instruction, you can also use it to run your own, highly effective, adult training courses.
  • Every lesson is presented on two facing sheets of A4 paper (the pages are much bigger than in any other Excel book).
  • Each lesson has a sample file that models a real-world business problem. You?ll immediately appreciate the value and relevance of each skill you learn.

Advanced concepts are explained without needless technical jargon. Everything is concisely described in a simple, no-nonsense way. No matter what your background is, this book will enable you to master Excel's most advanced features.
