  1. Rollover (web design)

about a web design other uses Rollover disambiguation Unreferenced date February 2011 Rollover refers to a button created by a web developer or web designer, found within a web page , used to provide interactivity between the user and the page itself. The term rollover in this regard originates from the visual process of rolling the mouse cursor over the button causing the button to react usually visually, by replacing the button s source image with another image , and sometimes resulting in a change in the web page itself. The part of the term roll is probably referring to older mice which had a mechanical assembly consisting of a hard rubber ball housed in the base of the mouse which rolls contrary to the modern optical mouse, which has no rolling parts. The term mouseover is probably more appropriate considering current technology. Rollovers can be done by imagery, text or buttons. The user only requires 2 images buttons with the possible addition of alt text to these images to perform this interactive action. Rollover imagery can be done either by a program with a built in tool or script coding. The user will have to pick a first image and select an alternate secondary image. A mouse action will have to be set to either click on or mouse over in order for the rollover to be triggered. Note that when the mouse over moves on the image, the alt image secondary image will appear but won t stay when the user mouses out by moving the mouse away from the image, the original source image will reappear. Because of this, finding an optimal implementation has been likened to searching for the elusive Holy Grail . The problem Many web pages require a layout with multiple often three columns, with the main page content in one column often the center , and supplementary content such as menus and advertisements in the other columns sidebars . These columns commonly require separate backgrounds, with borders between them, and should appear to be the same height no matter which column has the tallest content. There are many obstacles to accomplishing this CSS, although quite useful for styling, currently has Cascading Style Sheets Limitations limited capabilities for page layout. The height of block elements such as div elements is normally determined by their content. So two divisions, side by side, with different amounts of content, will have different heights unless their height is somehow set to an appropriate value. HTML is meant to be used semantic HTML semantically the purpose of HTML tags is to describe the type of content inside them. 1. Three-click rule

Orphan date February 2009 The three click rule or three click rule is an unofficial web design rule concerning the design of website navigation. It suggests that a user of a website should be able to find any information with no more than three mouse clicks. It is based on the belief that users of a site will become frustrated and often leave if they cannot find the information within the three clicks. Although there is little analytical evidence that this is the case, it is a commonly held belief amongst designers that the three click rule is part of a good system of navigation. Critics of the rule suggest that the number of clicks is not as important as the success of the clicks. ref http www.uie.com articles three click rule Testing the Three Click Rule ref In his book, Taking Your Talent to the Web 2001 , Jeffrey Zeldman wrote that the Three Click Rule is based on the way people use the Web and the rule can help you create sites with intuitive, logical hierarchical structures . ref cite book last Zeldman first Jeffery authorlink Jeffrey Zeldman title Taking Your Talent to the Web Making the Transition from Graphic Design to Web Design publisher New Riders date 30 May 2001 pages 448 isbn 978 0735710733 ref The UK government s business advice site Business Link advises the use of the rule as a best practice in web design. ref http www.businesslink.gov.uk bdotg action detail?type RESOURCES&itemId 1075384976 Best practice in web design ref Criticism The three click rule has been challenged by usability test results, which have shown that the number of clicks needed to access the desired information affects neither user satisfaction, nor success rate ref http uxmyths.com post 654026581 myth all pages should be accessible in 3 clicks Myth 2 All pages should be accessible in 3 clicks ref .
