  18. Blob Tracking
    Duration: 53

Description: In this below video, I ran a few algorithms in tandem. First, I removed all non-red objects. Next, I blurred the video a bit to make blobs more connected. Then, using blob detection, I only kept the blob that had the most pixels (the largest red object). This removed background objects such as the fire extinguisher. Lastly, I did center of mass to track the actual location of the object. I also ran a population threshold algorithm that made the object edges really sharp. It doesnt improve the algorithm in this case, but it does make it look nicer as a video. To learn more about computer vision and see other robotics tutorials, check out www.societyofrobots.com

  19. Vision Reconstruction
    Duration: 2:56

Description: Using Hollywood movie trailers, UC Berkeley researchers have succeeded in decoding and reconstructing people's dynamic visual experiences. The brain activity recorded while subjects viewed a set of film clips was used to create a computer program that learned to associate visual patterns in the movie with the corresponding brain activity. The brain activity evoked by a second set of clips was used to test the movie reconstruction algorithm. This was done by feeding 18 million seconds of random YouTube videos into the computer program so that it could predict the brain activity that each film clip would most likely evoke in each subject. Using the new computer model, researchers were able to decode brain signals generated by the films and then reconstruct those moving images. Eventually, practical applications of the technology could include a better understanding of what goes on in the minds of people who cannot communicate verbally, such as stroke victims, coma patients and people with neurodegenerative diseases. It may also lay the groundwork for brain-machine devices that would allow people with cerebral palsy or paralysis, for example, to guide computers with their minds. The lead author of the study, published in Current Biology on September 22, 2011, is Shinji Nishimoto, a post-doctoral researcher in the laboratory of Professor Jack Gallant, neursoscientist and coauthor of the study. Other coauthors include Thomas Naselaris with UC Berkeley's Helen Wills ...

  20. ARTag "Magic Lens"
    Duration: 4:38

Description: ARTag is an "Augmented Reality" system where virtual objects, games, and animations appear to enter the real world. 3D graphics is added in real time to video, similar to "view matching" in Hollywood, except that with Augmented Reality it is happening online. ARTag "Magic Lens" and "Magic Mirror" systems use arrays of the square ARTag markers added to objects or the environment allowing a computer vision algorithm to calculate the camera "pose" in real time, allowing the CG (computer graphics) virtual camera to be aligned. This gives the illusion of 3D animations or video games to appear to belong in the real world.
