  1. Georgia On My Mind: Tutorial for piano by 7notemode
    Duration: 26:38

Description: This is a run through of Georgia that is similar to the video post of Georgia that I posted previously. I focused on a few foundational techniques as well as some practical left hand voicings for quarter note self accompaniment. Do not worry if you can't hit 9th or 10ths You can roll the notes and it will sound fine. I hope you find this in some way helpful.

  5. Tutorial: Here's that Rainy Day
    Duration: 24:20

Description: This is a breakdown of the video I posted by the same name. I have the midi file from this video on my website www.7notemode.com. Sorry for all the technical glitches -- digital keyboard, etc. A software update has created a lot of mischief with my plugin's! Playing in B major can be a challenge, but the key has some great overtones on the piano. I hope you find it helpful.

    Duration: 8:03

Description: Visit www.7notemode.com This video and a collection of tutorials are for sale. Ha! I've been getting a lot of *emails* (not letters) asking me to do something instructional. I mispoke at the beginning of the video. As a disclaimer, I misname a few chords....OK, a lot of the chords in the video. When I play, I don't think of the chords by their proper names, so I hope I haven't confused anyone too much with my loose naming scheme. Thanks for watching. I hope you find it helpful. 7notemode

  8. My Foolish Heart by 7notemode: free mp3 download available
    Duration: 5:28

Description: Download an mp3 at www.soundcloud.com/7notemode The video of me playing was corrupted, so I decided to post this without it! My Foolish Heart is a lovely tune that is a pleasure to play. I took a restrained approach in order not to get in the way of the song. I also used a number of chord substitutions but again kept the voicings of the chords somewhat minimalist. For those that are interested, I played a single track on piano (not a multi-track). I then used the full midi file for the piano, a 'lowest note priority' of the same midi file for the bass (Trilian Bass) and a constrained range for the guitar (Trilian martin guitar), again of the same midi file. All instruments played off of the same midi track simultaneously. Thanks for listening, I hope you enjoy.

  9. Willow Weep For Me - with companion tutorial video
    Duration: 7:14

Description: www.7notemode.com This is a link to purchase a companion 40 minute Video Tutorial on Willow Weep For Me. I am trying to see how much interest there is in this extended tutorial format that goes beyond what I can post on YouTube. Basically, I am sharing my thoughts and approach to the tune. I would appreciate feedback as to whether this hits the mark or not. The midi file and pdf transcript are included for $4.50 using PayPal. This piece is done in a simple blues style using the blues scale as the base. My playing is a bit more casual than usual. Basically I'm just blowing over the changes in an informal way, which is more like I play for myself. I hope you enjoy it.

  10. Piano Tutorial: Still Crazy After All These Years
    Duration: 23:34

Description: This is to accompany my recent video upload of Still Crazy. Sorry for the bad lighting. I have to remember to use two lights! I thought this would be of value because this song has a deceptively complex structure. Deceptive resolutions, key changes and unexpected modulations make it a really interesting song to learn to play. Paul Simon sings it as if it is very simple, which is a great choice. I hope you fine it useful. Tom 7note

  11. Day Dream Tutorial Part 1
    Duration: 10:23

Description: I chose this Billy Strahorn/Duke Ellington tune for a tutorial because it has so many interesting harmonic possibilities. The melody is simple and has a floating quality, while the chords supporting the melody for the most part glide downward chromatically. I gave in to this structure and didnt play against it. Instead, I went with the chromatic declines and accentuated that part of the structure in my harmonic substitutions. This is a good tune to focus on finger linking, ie playing legato without the pedal. Jazz requires far less pedal than classical, so finger linkages become more important. Also if you are doing densely voiced chords, playing them dry is especially important. The pedal makes dense voicings sound clashy due to the overabundance of overtones.

  13. Moanin' -- jazz piano
    Duration: 5:01

Description: I listened to a CD by Eldar Djangirov recently which had this tune on it. I really liked how he approached it. He would go big, then go small, then go big again. He plays it with a happy Oscar Peterson vibe. I thought it would be fun to copy his approach. I didn't copy his notes, but I tried to get the same feel and same musical arcs. This was a lot of fun to do. It was a bit of a stretch because it is different than my usual style. It also gave me the opportunity to explore GarageBand a little bit more. The backing tracks were done before I recorded the piano track. I used GarageBand and Synthogy Ivory Steinway piano patch. The keyboard is a Yamaha CP300. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed doing this.

Description: This is a wonderful tune to stretch out on. The chords meander in such a beautiful way. I had not played this in a while and did not pre-think it much. I am playing the Galaxy Vintage D piano in Kontakt 4. I just got it, and I really like this sampled instrument.. I'm using my Yamaha CP300 as a controller.

  16. Tutorial: A House Is Not A Home, Part 3 (of 3)
    Duration: 9:45

Description: This is a breakdown of the 'A House Is Not A Home' video I previously posted at the following link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXK_Vx-T0wY By way of explaination, I took a completely different approach to playing the head vs. playing the improvised portion of this song. For the first run through of the melody, I used a lot of color notes, or voicings to give the melody a particular kind of sound. In the improvised section, I took a very simple approach- one that introduces the use of 7 note modes. I limit my improvised playing To Just The 7 Notes Of A Few Scales. When you use this method, it is impossible to play a wrong note while improvising. (Really!) All 7 notes sound 'right'. Constructing improvised melodies requires other skills as well, but this is an great way to begin improvising. It builds confidence in playing improvisationally, and there is a lot of instant gratification and fun to this approach. All you need to know are a few basic scales, and then: you can't play any wrong notes! ;-) This also trains the ear to hear relationships between various chords and the scales that best fit them. I'm being a little bit sneaky with this approach. For instance, I say 'Use Bb major to improvise', when in reality it is an A Locrian mode, but the notes are the same as Bb Major Scale, so that's what I call it. At some point in the future, I plan on doing a video on how to improve the quality of improvised melodies, but this is the first step to getting there. I'm also curious ...

  17. Here's that Rainy Day -- Bill Evans Style
    Duration: 5:22

Description: I have a lot of affection for this tune. I did the head with a lot of Bill Evans licks. He likes to start in a key and then modulate up one and one half steps to a new key. It's a very tranquil type of key change. I start off in B major and change to D major after the first pass. Again, I'm using Synthogy's Ivory II Steinway patch for the piano sound. I added some reverb and changed some of the settings as compared to In your Own Sweet Way, which was my last post. I'm playing a Yamaha CP300, which I use as a midi controller. I mix and master in Logic on a macbook pro. I hope you enjoy.

  19. Christmas Song - McCoy Tyner Style Tutorial
    Duration: 6:37

Description: The midi file of my piano solo as well as a PDF transcription file along the backing track file are all available at www.Lot2Learn.com At this time of year I am invariably playing a number of holiday gigs and find myself re-learning all of the traditional songs that I forgot from last year. For fun, I enjoy trying different arrangements and applying different styles of playing to keep things interesting. My apologies to anyone who prefers their holiday music played with more of a traditional approach and for you I suggest the great tutorial by 7notemode here www.youtube.com One aspect of the phenomenal style of McCoy Tyner is his amazing ability to incorporate the use of pentatonic scales while playing through a series of chord changes. This unmistakable "McCoy" sound is very pleasing to my ears and I enjoy playing in this style. CAUTION: This video is very heavy with the use of pentatonics in order to help with the learning of this style. Use this technique prudently in an actual performance. Some Tech Notes: Roland FP-4 Piano Midikeyz virtual keyboard display (www.midikeyz.com) BIAB backing track for chord changes display Screen Capture using Blueberry Flashback Pro Titles and compositing with Adobe Premiere Elements Annotations and rendering using Camtasia Studio As always, thank you for listening.

  20. I Fall In Love Too Easily -- jazz acoustic piano solo
    Duration: 6:44

Description: I have posted a companion score and midi file on my website, www.7notemode.com This is a streamilined version to share some of the voicings I'm using. I also included a basic bass line as an example of how to get started doing a walking bass. I have had a lot of requests for teaching material, so this a bit of an experiment for me to see how much interest there is. This tune is from the 1945 film "Anchors Aweigh", and was a standard played by Miles Davis and Bill Evans. The Miles Davis recordings of it are amazing. I took a fairly standard approach to it, using some chord substitutions, but I didn't go that far out. This is an unusual structure because it is only 16 measures long, and plays in a repeating AB pattern. Something about the changes makes me want to go over and over it. It's very circular. I never get tired of playing it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did playing it.

  21. WILLOW WEEP FOR ME transp. (Wolf with 7notemode)
    Duration: 7:03

Description: WOLFS YouTube LIST OF SONGS To avoid some misunderstandings: I am not trying to compete with the great jazz-vocalists, whom I know and admire. What sense would be in that with my German accent and completely untrained voice? I rather try to do something that has not been done often before: I try to perform (mostly) jazz-standards in the style of cabaret songs, that is focusing on the meaning of the text. (One innocent boy wrote to me: You are actually sometimes not singing, but rather speaking. ;-) I know a thing or two about cabaret songs, since I published the first description in book-form of that genre. (I would rather not mention, what year ;-) Why jazz standards? Because they offer me the freedom to improvise (and occasionally scat), when I feel like it. And I simply LOVE them. (Dont worry, I KNOW the original melodies! ;-) Most of these postings were originally recorded by my friends in karaoke-bars here in Japan. (Many with handies! That explains the uneven sound-quality. And they all are improvised, which explains the uneven musical quality. But I flatter myself in thinking that I am rather good in anticipating what is coming in the accompaniment.) When I ran out of good songs in those bars, I sang some more - with famous musicians (wolf1750) - into my tiny pin-hole mike in the frame of my iMac. Of those promptly about 100 were thrown out by the owners of the copyrights. This doesnt make any sense to me, since these are useless commercially because of my singing ...

  22. Stella By Starlight (reharmonised) Jazz piano tutorial
    Duration: 2:18

Description: Stella By Starlight (reharmonised). Loosely based on a reharmonised lead sheet by Andy Laverne that I saw in an old Keyboard Magazine. It is just one play through of the song. I tried to make it as simple to play as I could. There are several other versions on Youtube by Lot2learn and 7notemode that are excellent. Watch it here in higher quality youtube.com or go to my website for a fully downloadable version. The transcription is on my DVD - details are on my website. This was played in free time, and I had to adjust the measures to suit the 32 bar scheme known by most pianists who play the tune. This is difficult sometimes to get an accurate repesentation of what was played.

  23. Equinox By John Coltrane - Latin Style Tutorial with Notation
    Duration: 3:01

Description: The MIDI file of my Piano solo as well as a PDF notation file and an MP3 backing track file are all available on my website at www.lot2learn.com. This was a request that I just couldn't turn down. ;-) I love to play the blues, and a minor one just makes it that much more fun for me. I did this in a Latin style because it seems to groove nicely in that style for me. The notation track is fairly accurate thanks to some pointers from Jazz2511 and I've added a few annotations to give an insight into some of my improvisation. As always, thanks for listening! - Roger

  24. Nigerian Marketplace (written by Oscar Peterson)
    Duration: 9:09

Description: I put this back track together in GarageBand and Logic as a way familiarize myself with tune. Even though the song has a simple structure, it is really very challenging to play. I have total respect and awe for what Oscar Peterson did with it. This was more of a learning exercise for me. I felt pushed way beyond my comfort zone on this piece, but it is really a joy to play.

  25. Tutorial: Misty (Part 1)
    Duration: 8:15

Description: Hello Everyone. I received a number of questions about the Misty video I recently put up. I used a few voicings and chords that were different than what is normally found on the chart. In this video, I try to share my approach to this tune in an understandable way. If you find something in this video worth incorporating into your own playing, it's free for the taking and I would consider it a compliment. I hope you find it helpful.
