Encouragement for the Depressed/Foretaste of Heavenly Life - Sermon on Audio CD by Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

This audio CD consists of two separate sermons:

"Encouragement for the Depressed" -- "Who despises the day of small things?" [Zechariah 4:10]

"Now we will use this question at this time for the comfort of two sorts of people-first, for weak believers, and secondly, for feeble workers. Our object will be to strengthen of the hands that hang down, and bolster the feeble knees."--C. H. Spurgeon

"Foretastes of Heavenly Life" -- "Taking with them some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported, 'It is a good land that the LORD our God is giving us.'" [Deuteronomy 1:25]

"I will present to you some views of heaven in order to give you some idea how it is that the Christian on earth enjoys a foretaste of the blessings that are yet to be revealed. Possibly, there are scarcely two Christians who have the same views of heaven; though they all expect to go to the same heaven"

Pray, Always Pray - Sermon on Audio CD by Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)

Format:

"Taking the text as referring to the period of time in which we now live, I notice,

First, the believer's daily exercise: "In that day you will ask in my name."

Secondly, we have the believer's privileged position: "I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God."

Thirdly, I will practically try to suggest what should be the believer's natural conclusion from the blessed truth, which is here revealed to us."

Our Gifts and How to Use Them - Sermon on Audio CD by Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

"I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands." [2 Timothy 1:6]

Timothy was a somewhat shy and timid youth and that from the gentleness of his nature he needed to be exhorted to be bold in his witness and testimony. He is told not to be ashamed to testify about our Lord, and to endure hardship like a good soldier of Jesus Christ. He is called to the front though his timid nature would have kept him in the rear, and he is exhorted to command and teach, allowing no one to despise his youth. Perhaps, also, he was not a man of very forceful action, and needed every now and then a little touch of the spur to induce him to awaken all his dormant energy to energize himself and his church in passionate labor for Christ. He had a very choice spirit, and therefore it was desirable to see it strong, brave, and energetic. The apostle Paul tells Timothy, in his first epistle, not to neglect the gift that is in him, and in the text before us he tells him to fan into flame that gift: in each case Paul is sounding the trumpet in his ear, and commanding him to passionate action.

There are many kinds of gifts. All Christians have some gift. Some may have only one gift, but all have at least one. The Great Master has apportioned to every servant a gift. No single part of a vital body is without its function and position. Every living saint has his or her charge to keep - their talent, over which they are a steward. A measure of gift is in all of us, needing to be fanned into a flame.

First, we will discuss the gift that may be in each one of us; and then, secondly, how we are to fan it into flame; and in conclusion, we will give reasons for fanning it into a flame.

Infant Salvation - Sermon on Audio CD by Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

"'Is your child all right?' 'Everything is all right,' she said." [2 Kings 4:26]

"The subject of this morning's sermon will be "Infant Salvation." It may not be interesting to all who are present, but I don't remember ever having preached on this subject to this congregation before, and I am concerned that our sermons cover the whole range of theology. I think there is no one point which ought to be left out in our ministry, even though it may only yield comfort to a certain group.

Perhaps the majority of this audience have at some time or other had to shed tears over a child's little coffin-it may be that through this subject consolation may be afforded to them. First, then, this morning, I shall endeavor to explain the way in which we believe infants are saved; secondly, give reasons for believing this; and then, thirdly, seek to bring out a practical use of the subject."

When You Fast - An Audio Sermon on CD by John Wesley (1703-1791)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." [Matthew 6:16-18]

Of all the means of grace there is scarcely any concerning which men have run into greater extremes, than that of which our Lord speaks in our text this morning, I mean Christian fasting. Some have exalted this type of fasting beyond all Scripture and reason; and others have utterly disregarded it; as it were retaliating by undervaluing it as much as the others had overvalued it! No doubt the truth lies somewhere in-between. It is not everything, nor yet is it nothing. It is not the end, but it is a precious means to the end; a means which God himself has ordained, and in which therefore, when it is properly used, God will surely give us his blessing.

In order to set this in the clearest light, I shall endeavor to show:

I. First, what is the nature of fasting, and what are the different types and degrees.

II. Secondly, what are the reasons, purposes, and objectives of fasting.

III. Thirdly, how we can answer the most likely objections against fasting.

IV. Fourthly, how we are to fast.

The Secret Power in Prayer -- Sermon on Audio CD by Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

Jesus says to his disciples, "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you." It is to a certain class of men and women who have already received abundant grace at his hands-it is to them that he gives this marvelous power of prayer. O my dear friends, if I may earnestly desire one thing above every other, it is this; that I may be able to ask of the Lord whatever I wish for, and have it given to me. The minister who is diligent in prayer is the man that will find success in his preaching. This is also true for the man facing difficulties in any line of business; for what can baffle him when he can take everything to God in prayer?

This kind of man or woman in a church is worth ten thousand of us common people. In these are the men and women in whom is fulfilled God's purpose concerning mankind, whom he made to have dominion over his creation. The stamp of sovereignty is on the foreheads of these men and women: they shape the history of nations; they guide the current of events through their power in prayer with the Almighty God. Aspire to be such men and women, I beg you, that in you, the text may be fulfilled. "Ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you."

I ask for your serious attention to our text, begging you to consider with me three questions.

1. First, what is this special blessing? "Ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you."

2. Secondly, how is this special blessing obtained? "If you remain in me and my words remain in you."

3. Thirdly, why is it obtained in this way? Why is it that by remaining in Christ, and having his words remain in us, that we get this liberty and power in prayer?

Redeeming the Time -- Audio Sermon on CD by Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

"Redeeming the time." (Ephesians 5:16, KJV)

Christians should not only look for ways to improve the opportunities they have, for their own advantage, but also labor to rescue others from their evil ways; so that God might defer his anger, and they might be redeemed from that terrible destruction, which, when it does come, would put an end to the time of divine patience in their lives. And it may be because of this, that the reason is added, "Because the days are evil."

It is as if the apostle had said, the wickedness of the times tends to accelerate the coming judgments of God, but your holy and guarded walk will tend to redeem time from the devouring jaws of those calamities.

Our text today commands us to set a high value on our opportunities in life and to be very careful that they are not lost; and we are therefore exhorted to exercise wisdom and caution, in order that we may make the most of our time. Therefore it appears, that the time allocated for us in our lives is extremely precious.

Preaching Christ Crucified - Sermon on Audio CD by Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

"We preach Christ crucified." - 1 Corinthians 1:23.

In the verse preceding our text, Paul writes, "Jews demand miraculous signs." They said, "Moses performed miracles; let us see miracles performed, and then we will believe," forgetting that all the miracles that Moses did were completely eclipsed by those which Jesus did while he was on the earth as the God-man.

Then there were certain Judaizing teachers who, in order to win the Jews, preached circumcision, exalted the Passover, and endeavored to prove that Judaism might still exist side by side with Christianity, and that the old rites might still be practiced by the followers of Christ.

So Paul, who was "all things to all men so that by all possible means he might save some," put his foot down, and said, in effect, "Whatever others may do, we preach Christ crucified; we dare not, we cannot, and we will not alter the great subject matter of our preaching, Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

I am going to try to put our text into practice by telling you, first, what we preach; secondly, to whom we preach it; and, thirdly, how we are to preach it.

True Power--True Prayer...Sermon on Audio CD by Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

"Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

There are many Christians, I think, who complain of this-that they pray not so much because it is a blessed thing that allows them to draw near to God, but because they must pray, because it is their duty, because they feel that if they did not, they would lose one of the sure evidences of being Christians. Brothers and sisters, I don't condemn you; but at the same time, if I may be the means of lifting you up this morning from so low a state of grace into a higher and healthier atmosphere, my soul will be extremely glad. If I can show you a more excellent way; if from this time forward you may come to look at prayer as your natural state, as one of the most delightful exercises of your life; if you will come to esteem it more than your necessary food, and to value it as one of heaven's best luxuries, surely I will have answered a great end, and you will have to thank God for a great blessing."--C. H. Spurgeon

Christian Conversation - Sermon on Audio CD by Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)
Publisher: www.gospelgems.com
Format:
Platform:

"It is regretful that true children of the Lord often talk too little about Him. What is the conversation of half the true Christians of the present day? Honesty compels us to say that, in many cases, it is a mass of silliness, slander, gossip and even lies. Often it is utterly devoid of the gospel, and does not minister grace to the hearers.

I consider that one of the great needs of the Church today, is not so much Christian preaching as Christian talking,-not so much Christian prayer in the prayer-meeting, as Christian conversation in the home and marketplace. How little do we hear conversation about Christ! "
