After having been signed with Stranger Records, Interscope Records and Polydor, Del Rey made her debut in January 2012 with the studio album Born to Die, an indie pop piece inspired by different musical styles such as sadcore and soul. As of July 2012, Born to Die has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. It peaked at number one in Greece, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and other European countries. Furthermore, it topped the albums chart in Australia, where it was subsequently certified Platinum. The first single, "Video Games", was released in October 2011. It was well received by both critics and the general public, and reached number one in Germany. The album spawned two more singles: "Born to Die", which gained popularity in the United Kingdom, and "Blue Jeans", a song that Del Rey also performed on Saturday Night Live.
