Confronting the Truth: Truth Commissions and Societies in Transition, PAL version
Publisher: York Zimmerman Inc.
Format: PAL

Confronting the Truth shows how countries, which have experienced massive human rights violations, have created official, independent bodies known as truth commissions.

Since 1983, truth commissions have been established in over 20 countries, in all parts of the world. Confronting the Truth documents the work of truth commissions in South Africa, Peru, East Timor, and Morocco. Taking testimony from victims and perpetrators, and conducting detailed investigations, truth commissions create a historical record of abuses that have often remained secret. They identify patterns of abuse, and the structural and institutional weaknesses, and societal and cultural problems, and weak legal systems that made the violation possible. To remedy these faults, they recommend governmental, societal and legal reforms to address the pain of the past, to safeguard human rights and due process, and to ensure that the horror will not be repeated.

1950's Cons & Pros of Nuclear Energy: An Atomic Energy Commission Propaganda Film: The Benefits From Nuclear Power Plants (DVD)
Publisher: Quality Information Publishers, Inc.
Format:

A frightening look at how industrialists proposed to apply nuclear power to all facets of American life, Atoms for Peace is a nonstop promotion of nuclear energy that tragically stresses the harmlessness and efficiency of nuclear energy. Nuclear power was one of the fastest growing fields in the twentieth century and this film is a landmark in nuclear power history. For example, nuclear power was embraced by the oil industry by utilizing radioisotopes to save the industry nearly a half a million dollars a year through the use of atomic tracers in the oil. The film enumerates the uses of nuclear energy, which includes how particles can tell scientists about the affects of aging on car engines, the length of paper or sheet metal in a factory, and help find microscopic flaws in metals. Perhaps the biggest advancement with isotopes is in the energy sector. For example, atomic scientists tell the viewer, much more energy is stored in a small amount of uranium compared to coal. Nuclear energy can be an alternative energy form for places that currently have no electricity. It will take quite some time before nuclear energy can be a competitive form of energy in the United States. However, a promising study just took place in which test administrators shut off the electrical power in a mock city and replaced electric with nuclear power. The lights came back on. Nuclear research also has a big affect in American agriculture. Scientists are now able to study plants in all new ways. They can build stronger, better plants. Fertilizers are being tested and improved. Great strides have been made against disease. With the help of atomic energy, pharmaceuticals are developing medicines and possible cures for cancer, leukemia, and diabetes. Researchers have even found that atomic energy can shrink tumors and kill cancer cells. The advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power are not fairly weighed in this classically biased promotional video.

Historic Atomic Bombs Testing Films DVD: Atom Bomb Test Explosions w/ WWII & Hiroshima History
Publisher: Quality Information Publishers, Inc.
Format:

Watch over 100+ minutes of atomic bomb footage and rare government informational films about atomic testing on this unique DVD collection of the best rare atomic bomb films of history. Between the years of 1951 and 1962, the United States carried out 85+ above ground atomic bomb tests at the Nevada atomic bombs test site. In addition to this, many underground tests were also carried out at the same Nevada site, and the infamous Marshall Islands and Bikini testing took place, which basically ruined the environment and health of an entire country. The people of the Marshall Islands were actually forced to move from island to island after the thyroid and cancer problems on each island became uncontrollable and the nuclear radiation from the atomic bomb explosion testing was too harmful for humans to survive. One of the islands of the country was completely decimated. The U.S. military also performed dozens of other atomic bomb tests to gather data during the 1940s and 1950s. Atomic bombs were detonated from every place possible: air, water, under ground, and above ground. Cameras, scientists and data logs recorded nearly everything. Many of these experiments included having buildings, people, and items necessary for survival such as water, food, soldiers, shelters, and power lines near the explosion so they could be tested for damage and radiation. Come watch the original footage of all these tests and see first-hand the power of the atomic bomb.
