Centerville, Fremont (Images of America Series) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing))
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
Author(s): Philip Holmes, Jill M. Singleton

The tale of Centerville, Fremont--part of the sprawling landscape of the southeast San Francisco Bay--begins with near forgotten histories such as the once sprawling grandeur of the Alviso rancho and the California 100, a battalion raised in Centerville for the Civil War. Centerville celebrates a sporting-mad past, centrally located on the "Way to San Jose" from Oakland on the long, straight stretch once famed for horse and then bicycle racing and later as a motor-touring destination on the early Route 17. By the 1890s, Centerville was home to Washington Union High School and the Centerville Athletic Club and began collecting trophies in football, rugby, baseball, and other sports. Fabled athletes of later eras include Wimbledon tennis queen Helen Wills Moody, football coach Bill Walsh, and hall of fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley.

Niles, Fremont (CA) (Images of America)
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
Author(s): Philip Holmes, Jill M. Singleton

Beautiful Niles Canyon in Fremont is a chosen spot. Jose de Jesus Vallejo chose it for the first mill town in Alta California, Joaquin Murieta slept here, and Leland Stanford chose it in 1869 for the last leg of the transcontinental railroad, the true last spike of the line linking the Atlantic to the Pacific. The home of the largest nursery in the West, Niles could also boast the first gravel mines in California and fine Art Deco tile production. In 1912 world famous Essanay Studios chose the oak-studded hills of Niles Canyon as the location for some of the most famous silent films of all time, including Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp, and the first Wild West movie stars strutted the dusty streets of Niles.

Traces of Fremont: Society and Rock Art in Ancient Utah
Publisher: University of Utah Press
Author(s): Steven R Simms

Fremont is a culture (ca. 300?1300 A.D.) first defined by archaeologist Noel Morss in 1928 based on characteristics unique to the area. Initially thought to be a simple socio-political system, recent reassessments of the Fremont assume a more complex society. This volume places Fremont rock art studies in this contemporary context. Author Steven Simms offers an innovative model of Fremont society, politics, and worldview using the principles of analogy and current archaeological evidence. Simms takes readers on a trip back in time by describing what a typical Fremont hamlet or residential area might have looked like a thousand years ago, including the inhabitants' daily activities. Franois Gohier's captivating photographs of Fremont art and artifacts offer an engaging complement to Simms's text, aiding us in our understanding of the lives of these ancient people.

Irvington, Fremont (CA) (Images of America)
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
Author(s): Philip Holmes, Jill M. Singleton

Before there was a city of Fremont, there was the town of Irvington, and earlier still a busy crossroads called Washington Corners. Fields of grain once spilled over an open landscape, spurring production here of the first wheat harvesters in California. After local landowners built the Washington College of Science and Industry in the 1870s, they renamed its host town Irvington. By 1890, it boasted the largest, most advanced winery in the state and had earned the title, Beautiful Irvington, home of gracious estates, apricot orchards, baseball, and first-class, high-bred trotters. Cows from Swiss dairy farms populated its green fields by the 1920s, and experimental airplanes dotted its blue skies soon after. In 1956, the City of Fremont absorbed Irvington, and its muddy sloughs were transformed into Central Park and lovely Lake Elizabeth.

Passion and Principle: John and Jessie Fremont, the Couple Whose Power, Politics, and Love Shaped Nineteenth-Century America
Publisher: Bison Books
Author(s): Sally Denton

John Charles Frmont was the illegitimate child of a Virginia aristocrat and a working-class French immigrant; Jessie Benton was the daughter of the most powerful pre-Civil War U.S. senator, Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, and, her gender notwithstanding, had been groomed as much as any young man to be president. Senator Benton unwittingly brought the two together, never imagining that his daughter would fall in love with Frmont. Despite their disparate backgrounds, however, John and Jessie?s marriage was one of the most storied events of the nineteenth century.

And indeed, Jessie and John made a formidable couple. Both together and apart they contributed significantly to shaping the United States. He was a key figure in western expansion and the first presidential candidate for the Republican Party. She was a savvy political operator who played confidante and adviser to the highest political powers in the country. Despite their great efforts on behalf of their country, however, their reputations did not survive a Washington smear campaign led by none other than Jessie?s father.

Written with an investigative journalist?s eye for detail and a novelist?s flair, this biography of explorer, politician, and gold-mine owner John C. Frmont and his intellectual wife, Jessie Benton Frmont, also casts light on the tumultuous period that forms the backdrop for their lives, from the abolition of slavery to the building of the railroad.

The Fremont Culture: A Study in Culture Dynamics on the Northern Anasazi Frontier, including the Report of the Claflin-Emerson Expedition of the Peabody Museum
Publisher: University of Utah Press
Author(s): James H Gunnerson

In 1927, the Claflin-Emerson expedition of the Peabody Museum began a rapid and extensive archaeological reconnaissance of eastern Utah. The expedition was funded by William H. Claflin and Raymond Emerson, Bostonian businessmen with a deep devotion to the American Indian and a probing interest in the remote and mysterious regions of the American West.

Early expedition surveys and excavations conducted by Noel Morss would lead to a definition of the Fremont culture; later research would augment existing data on the Fremont by adding entirely new traits, disclosing new variations in architecture and basketry, and providing new information on the distribution of previously known traits.

In The Fremont Culture: A Study in Culture Dynamics on the Northern Anasazi Frontier, archaeologist James H. Gunnerson provides the results of his 1950s survey and excavation in the Utah area. He presents a functional synthesis of the Fremont culture and discusses the dynamics of its growth and decline.

Gunnerson?s report also uses the original field notes, maps, plans, photographs, sketches, and unpublished preliminary reports of the Claflin-Emerson expedition. Together, the reports of Morss and Gunnerson offer the most important and complete overview of the expedition available. They are fitting tributes to the men of that expedition, scientists who recognized the importance of an ancient people who once wrested a meager living from the rugged canyon country of the Green and Colorado Rivers.

Murder, Mayhem, and Mystery: Coroner Inquests in Fremont County Wyoming 1885-1900
Publisher: CreateSpace
Author(s): Mark R Stratmoen

You just can?t make this stuff up. The best Hollywood script writers are no match for the odd turns of fate, the twists of fortune, and the dramatic events that actually happen in real life. Here are real conspiracies, historical legends, mysterious murders, social scandals, and a horse thief who quite literally gets caught with his pants down. Inquests are often forgotten as a historical source, frequently lost in the glow of subsequent and more sensational public trials. Yet because of how the system operates, they are many times the most immediate and timely reconstruction of the scene and event, especially in the historical period where they were frequently held over the body at the place the death occurred. Included are forty-six stories of the beginnings of forensics and death investigation in Fremont County, Wyoming, from 1885 to 1900. Sometimes justice is served, sometimes it goes astray. Presented inside before you, the jury, is the evidence as gathered, and the testimony as heard, to await your impartial decision as to the cause and manner of death of the forty-six bodies that now lie before you.

COAL DUST IN THEIR HANDS: Last Days of Production at Energy Fuels Mine (Short True Story w/Photos) (Visceral History: Coal Mining)
Publisher: KINDLE GLOW BOOKS
Author(s): Linda G. Shelnutt

This Visceral History* is a true story of overwhelming grit is founded on values passed from father to son, both called Tom Shelnutt. The story features a coal mine and a group of never say quit miners who wouldn't give up the ghost until the spirit rose up into the sky.

The essence of this history was lifted from conversations with my husband over meals at our kitchen table, with him telling me about events of his just finished shift at Energy Fuels Coal, in Florence, Colorado. Our home is in Rockvale, 5 miles from Florence, population 400 (possibly including goats, donkeys, rattle snakes and scorpions, along with some true human characters). In our cottage there, the surfaces don't always sparkle as brightly I'd like them to, but the living is deep, and it's home.

The house especially feels so when I'm listening to Tom's work stories as he's eating supper or breakfast, depending on what shift he's worked. Maybe it feels even more so when he's out on our back 5 acres, toying with heavy old iron, rearranging it, or staring at sunlight slants on rust spots. And, it feels so when we drift into dreams at night, in a quiet town on the prairies, at the base of the foothills of the Wet Mountain Range of the Rockies.

VISCERAL HISTORY is my term for true stories told from the gut, usually featuring the perspective of the author in addition to one or a small number of individuals. I'm developing a code for this type of true account, with an update added 4/2/2012 to each of my seven stories in this collection which relate to the coal mining industry. This is the one in that collection which features my husband and his mechanic cohorts.

With Respect,
Linda Shelnutt

Here is a taste of the content from Tie Me Down and Take Me Hard:

The motel. That was it. They?d checked into a motel across the street from the bar. She remembered now, vaguely, but still certainly. They?d checked in. She was there now. She was tied to the bedpost because Frank was playing a game. Her heart slowed to a reasonable rate, and she smiled. Tammy had shared with Frank her wild fantasies about being tied down and taken by strangers, and on more than one occasion he had tied her hands to the bedposts and fucked her, even using dildos to add to the illusion of multiple men taking her. Of course, this was the first time he did it while she slept, but that made it even more exciting. Let?s get this show on the road. She yawned loudly and shifted a bit on the bed to let Frank know she was awake.
She saw a slight shift in the darkness and smiled, but the smile disappeared when she heard an unfamiliar male voice. ?Turn on the light, she?s awake.? Her heart beat wildly again, half from thrill and half from fear. She heard a click and soft light flowed over the bed, but only over the bed. Beyond the bed was still murky darkness, and it was intensified more when another click shut off the lamp in the corner. She looked down at herself. She was naked. She was completely naked. Even as her heart beat wildly, she realized she hadn?t realized she was naked before the light came on.
?Frank?? She wanted to hear his voice, to hear him say he?d arranged it, to make the thrill grow stronger than the fear, but there was no response. She squinted her eyes and tried to see into the room, but the light was amazingly focused. It showed her completely but left the rest of the room dark. ?Frank??
She saw a hand enter the light above her body. It wasn?t Frank?s hand, but it groped at her breast as though it had every right to it. In fact, the man was quite rough, gripping it firmly and twisting her nipple in a savage pinch. She cried out in a squeal, and another hand entered from the other side of the bed and treated her other breast just as roughly. She squealed again and choked out, ?Frank??

Here is a preview:

Her nipples hurt, but she also felt a definite stirring between her legs. Strangers were touching her! Strangers! It was her guilty midnight fantasy brought to life?and Frank was nowhere to be found. Nowhere to be found! She called out again, loudly. ?FRANK??

The hands on her breasts twisted savagely, bringing tears of pain to her eyes but simultaneously sending another delicious shock that seemed to settle on her clit and fill her whole pussy with warmth. She gasped and cried out in both pain and pleasure, and the fingers on her nipples stayed tight, holding them in their twisted position.

A deep voice spoke softly. It came from across the room, so there was at least one more man in the room in addition to the one?s torturing her tits. ?We watched you two drunks stumble in here last night. When your husband left early, I bummed a smoke from him.? The hands let go of her nipples, sending a wave of relief but they twisted again immediately, and she almost screamed. ?Nice guy, your husband. I found out he worked in the financial district downtown. Like I said, nice guy. Gave me his card in case I need any planning.? Of course Frank had left. He worked very early, and they were at least an hour outside of town here. ?Of course, he told me his office hours, and it got me to thinking. With him having to come pick you up and traffic and all, he wouldn?t even get her until seven or eight tonight. There he was driving away at five in the morning, and I realized we had a drunk little slut all to ourselves.?

Pathfinder: John Charles Frmont and the Course of American Empire
Publisher: Hill and Wang
Author(s): Tom Chaffin

The amazing life of the explorer who first mapped the West and forever changed nineteenth-century America

The career of John Charles Frmont (1813-90) celebrates and ties together the full breadth of American expansionism from its eighteenth-century origins through its culmination in the Gilded Age. Tom Chaffin's important new biography demonstrates Frmont's vital importance to the history of American empire, and his role in shattering long-held myths about the ecology and habitability of the American West.

As the most celebrated American explorer and mapper of his time, Frmont stood at the center of the vast federal project of Western exploration and conquest. His expeditions between 1838 and 1854 captured the public's imagination, inspired Americans to accept their nation's destiny as a vast continental empire, and earned him his enduring sobriquet, the Pathfinder.

But Frmont was more than an explorer. Chaffin's dramatic narrative includes Frmont's varied experiences as an entrepreneur, abolitionist, Civil War general, husband to the remarkable Jessie Benton Frmont, two-time Republican presidential candidate, and Gilded Age aristocrat.

Chaffin brings to life the personal and political experiences of a remarkable American whose saga offers compelling insight into the conflicts, tensions, and contradictions at the core of America's lust for empire and its conquest of the trans-Missouri West.
