[More Info ...] Mathematics: From the Birth of Numbers Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company Author(s): Jan Gullberg A gently guided, profusely illustrated Grand Tour of the world of mathematics. This extraordinary work takes the reader on a long and fascinating journey--from the dual invention of numbers and language, through the major realms of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, to the final destination of differential equations, with excursions into mathematical logic, set theory, topology, fractals, probability, and assorted other mathematical byways. The book is unique among popular books on mathematics in combining an engaging, easy-to-read history of the subject with a comprehensive mathematical survey text. Intended, in the author's words, "for the benefit of those who never studied the subject, those who think they have forgotten what they once learned, or those with a sincere desire for more knowledge," it links mathematics to the humanities, linguistics, the natural sciences, and technology. Contains more than 1000 original technical illustrations, a multitude of reproductions from mathematical classics and other relevant works, and a generous sprinkling of humorous asides, ranging from limericks and tall stories to cartoons and decorative drawings. [More Info ...] Computability and Logic Publisher: Cambridge University Press Author(s): George S. Boolos, John P. Burgess, Richard C. Jeffrey Computability and Logic has become a classic because of its accessibility to students without a mathematical background and because it covers not simply the staple topics of an intermediate logic course, such as Godel's incompleteness theorems, but also a large number of optional topics, from Turing's theory of computability to Ramsey's theorem. Including a selection of exercises, adjusted for this edition, at the end of each chapter, it offers a new and simpler treatment of the representability of recursive functions, a traditional stumbling block for students on the way to the Godel incompleteness theorems. [More Info ...] The Crest of the Peacock: Non-European Roots of Mathematics (Third Edition) Publisher: Princeton University Press Author(s): George Gheverghese Joseph From the Ishango Bone of central Africa and the Inca quipu of South America to the dawn of modern mathematics, The Crest of the Peacock makes it clear that human beings everywhere have been capable of advanced and innovative mathematical thinking. George Gheverghese Joseph takes us on a breathtaking multicultural tour of the roots and shoots of non-European mathematics. He shows us the deep influence that the Egyptians and Babylonians had on the Greeks, the Arabs' major creative contributions, and the astounding range of successes of the great civilizations of India and China. The third edition emphasizes the dialogue between civilizations, and further explores how mathematical ideas were transmitted from East to West. The book's scope is now even wider, incorporating recent findings on the history of mathematics in China, India, and early Islamic civilizations as well as Egypt and Mesopotamia. With more detailed coverage of proto-mathematics and the origins of trigonometry and infinity in the East, The Crest of the Peacock further illuminates the global history of mathematics. [More Info ...] Computation and its Limits Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA Author(s): Paul Cockshott, Lewis M Mackenzie, Gregory Michaelson Computation and its Limits is an innovative cross-disciplinary investigation of the relationship between computing and physical reality. It begins by exploring the mystery of why mathematics is so effective in science and seeks to explain this in terms of the modelling of one part of physical reality by another. Going from the origins of counting to the most blue-skies proposals for novel methods of computation, the authors investigate the extent to which the laws of nature and of logic constrain what we can compute. In the process they examine formal computability, the thermodynamics of computation and the promise of quantum computing. [More Info ...]

[More Info ...] The Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education: Volume 2 (International Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education) Publisher: Sense Publishers Author(s): The Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education, the first of its kind, addresses the learning of mathematics teachers at all levels of schooling to teach mathematics, and the provision of activity and programmes in which this learning can take place. It consists of four volumes. Volume 2, Tools and Processes in Mathematics Teacher Education, focuses on the "how" of mathematics teacher education. In this volume, the authors share with the readers their invaluable experience in employing different tools in mathematics teacher education. This accumulated experience could assist teacher educators, researchers in mathematics education and those involved in policy decisions on teacher education in making decisions about both the tools and the processes to be used for various purposes in mathematics teacher education. There are four sections. The first describes and discusses four successful ways of using cases in mathematics teacher education, including narratives, mathematics case discussions, video-recordings, and lesson studies. The second presents predominant tools that are used in mathematics teacher education, two textual tools (written tasks and examples) and two physical tools (manipulatives and machines). The third section suggests ways in which the accumulated research on common students' ways of thinking contributes to the development of tools and processes in mathematics teacher education. The last section provides critical response and general perspective, raising questions such as: How can the teaching of mathematics be used as a tool to promote general educational values? What are the dimensions of proficient teaching? The concluding chapter offers a provisional framework consisting of a set of seven dimensions of proficiency for teaching mathematics. Together, the chapters provide various promising tools and processes for facilitating the acquisition of major proficiencies needed for teaching mathematics, and principles that could guide the selection and use of such tools. [More Info ...] The Emperor's New Mathematics: Western Learning and Imperial Authority During the Kangxi Reign (1662-1722) Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA Author(s): Catherine Jami In 1644 the Qing dynasty seized power in China. Its Manchu elite were at first seen by most of their subjects as foreigners from beyond the Great Wall, and the consolidation of Qing rule presented significant cultural and political problems, as well as military challenges. It was the Kangxi emperor (r. 1662-1722) who set the dynasty on a firm footing, and one of his main stratagems to achieve this was the appropriation for imperial purposes of the scientific knowledge brought to China by the Jesuit mission (1582-1773). For almost two centuries, the Jesuits put the sciences in the service of evangelization, teaching and practising what came to be known as 'Western learning' among Chinese scholars, many of whom took an active interest in it. After coming to the throne as a teenager, Kangxi began his life-long intervention in mathematical and scientific matters when he forced a return to the use of Western methods in official astronomy. In middle life, he studied astronomy, musical theory and mathematics, with Jesuits as his teachers. In his last years he sponsored a great compilation covering these three disciplines, and set several of his sons to work on this project. All of this activity formed a vital part of his plan to establish Manchu authority over the Chinese. This book explains why Kangxi made the sciences a tool for laying the foundations of empire, and to show how, as part of this process, mathematics was reconstructed as a branch of imperial learning.
