     Larry Kanes Philadelphia
Publisher: Temple University Press
Author(s): Larry Kane

Larry Kane, dean of Philadelphia news anchors, arrived in town to take a job as a radio broadcaster on September 12, 1966. Driving across the Walt Whitman Bridge, he spotted several fires raging to the south. After paying his toll, he drove to a pay phone and called the fire emergency line. The dispatcher responded, 'Whateryoutawkin about? Them there's oil refineries'. Thirty-four years later, Larry knows all about the oil refineries. In fact, there's very little that goes on in Philadelphia that he hasn't reported on at one time or another. And it's all here in this easy-reading look at Philadelphia government and politics, and the trials of a journalist trying to cover them. For Larry Kane watchers, this book answers some nagging questions: why did he leave for New York and why did he come back? What's the story behind the Bill Green lawsuit? Does he apply his own makeup? Larry is candid about his own mistakes, and about his successes. He talks about his insecurities and the strain of living life in the spotlight. But this is first and foremost a book about Philadelphia by a man who knows the city intimately. He has been close to more Philadelphia power figures than perhaps any other person. Here he talks personally about Ed Rendell, Arlen Specter, Vince Fumo, Lynne Abraham, John Cardinal Krol, Leon Sullivan, and, of course, the legendary Frank Rizzo. He has visited Jimmy Tayoun in jail, co-hosted a weekend radio marathon with John Lennon, and interviewed shirtless Lenny Dykstra, who insisted that the news team could just clip the microphone to his chest hair. Larry also has tales to tell about watching Martin Luther King Jr.'s killer being apprehended in Heathrow Airport, about barely escaping the riot at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, about traveling to earthquake-stricken Italy and to dissent-torn Israel. He has even been to Alaska to see the Pope (yes, he's also met him more conventionally at the Vatican). These are the reminiscences of a master-storyteller, a man whose job has been to see the city accurately and report on it informatively. Whether you're more familiar with Richardson Dilworth or Boyz II Men, you will laugh, groan, and be moved by Larry Kane's view of Philadelphia. Author note: Larry Kane is news anchor for "Eyewitness News" at 11 on KYW TV in Philadelphia.

     Clock Drawing: A Neuropsychological Analysis
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Author(s): Morris Freedman, Larry Leach, Edith Kaplan, Gordon Winocur, Kenneth Shulman, Dean C. Delis

Written by a multidisciplinary team of experts in neurobehavior, this concise, well-illustrated book provides normative data on clock drawing from ages 20 to 90 years. A practical guide to the quantitative assessment of clock drawing, it also takes a process-oriented approach to qualitative impairment. The authors discuss clock drawing as a neuropsychological test instrument and the rationale for selecting specific time settings, as well as the basis for using different clock conditions. The book contains numerous examples of clocks drawn by patients with cognitive impairment due to dementia, metabolic encephalopathy, traumatic brain injury, disconnection syndrome and focal brain lesions. Insight into changes in clock drawing ability that may represent the earliest markers of cognitive decline in dementia are also presented. This volume will be of interest to clinicians and researchers in neuropsychology, neurology, psychiatry, geriatric medicine, language therapy, and occupational therapy.

     The Gripping Hand
Publisher: Pocket Books
Author(s): Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle

Robert Heinlein called it "possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read." The San Francisco Chronicle declared that "as science fiction, The Mote in God's Eye is one of the most important novels ever published." Now Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, award winning authors of such bestsellers as Footfall and The Legacy of Heorot, return us to the Mote, and to the universe of Kevin Renner and Horace Bury, of Rod Blaine and Sally Fowler. There, 25 years have passed since humanity quarantined the mysterious aliens known as Moties within the confines of their own solar system. They have spent a quarter century analyzing and agonizing over the deadly threat posed by the only aliens mankind has ever encountered-- a race divided into distinct biological forms, each serving a different function. Master, Mediator, Engineer. Warrior. Each supremely adapted to its task, yet doomed by millions of years of evolution to an inescapable fate. For the Moties must breed-- or die. And now the fragile wall separating them and the galaxy beyond is beginning to crumble.

Drive: The Story of My Life
Publisher: Bantam
Author(s): Larry Bird

"Of all the people I play against, the only one I truly fear is Larry Bird."--Magic Johnson, from the Foreword.

The heart and soul of a champion: his life, his career, his game. To understand basketball, you have to understand Larry Bird. Arguably the greatest all-around player the game has ever known, he led the Boston Celtics from the basement to three world championships, collecting three NBA Most Valuable Player awards along the way. Yet, despite these massive accomplishments, Bird has rarely talked to the press, and much about the man has remained a mystery. Now in Drive, the long-silent superstar sets the record straight, revealed a side of himself-and of basketball-you've never see before. Inside, you'll learn Bird's most private feelings about: The momentous decision to transfer from Bobby Knight's Indiana University to Indiana State. The heartbreak of his father's suicide and his own failed marriage. The single-minded discipline that tumed a small-town hero into a national superstar. The Boston Garden and the legendary Celtic charm. The Isiah Thomas controversy and the fierce Celtic-Laker rivalry. The great players of the NBA: including Magic Johnson, Dominique Wilkins, and Michael Jordan, and much more. here is the book that puts a basketball legend-and his game-on the line. And scores!

     Freddy Sunshine
Publisher: Morris Publishing
Author(s): Larry L Slonaker

A thin ribbon separates life from death. One can have riches and fame and still face the issues of existing or not. There is also a fine line that separates a sane, sound mind from one that is damaged and insane. This was the case for Freddy Black as he gradually slid downward, going from sanity to insanity. He coped the best way he could with events in his life and the cards dealt him. Freddy was a talented student-athlete headed for college and with a scholarship a certainty, and seemingly nothing could get in his way. He was exciting and personable to be with and his classmates called him Freddy Sunshine. One day, in the summer before his senior year, fate intervened and his world came apart. He struggled with the cruel darkness that clouded his former self. His tarnished personality and resulting behavior were apparent to his mother. She was unable to cope with his obstinate, uncooperative behavior and sent him from their rural home in Indiana to live with her brother in Los Angeles after he graduated from high school. Freddy took several menial jobs in Los Angeles, and landed one in a convenience store as a clerk working the night shift. Repeated hold-ups further damaged him and produced an ominous change. When all seemed lost and he felt powerless, he had an epiphany--a seemingly trump card that would level the playing field with the continued hold-ups and other problems he faced. But his delusional mind and distorted sense of reality got in the way, and Freddy carried his new-found power to extremes as a killer.
