Holiday Seasons: New Year, Easter and Christmas in Nineteenth-Century New Zealand (AUP Studies in Cultural and Social History series)
Publisher: Auckland University Press
Author(s): Alison Clarke

Taking readers back in time and across the seas, this peek inside the lives of New Zealand settlers offers delightful descriptions of traditional British festivals and documents their development after being transplanted into the young colony. Though the seasons were reversed, the vegetation unfamiliar, and the land isolated, the early colonial New Zealanders were devoted to their traditions and kept them up in the face of not onlytheir physical environment but also the wide variety of religious cultures represented by both the colonists and the native islanders. The celebrations becameunique tothe islands that nurtured them, mixing traditions of Presbyterians and Catholics with Baptists, Anglicans, and the Maori.

Publisher: Moody Publishers
Author(s): Bill D. Thrasher, Penny Thrasher

Instead of the joy-filled celebrations that we build up in our minds, the holidays (pick one, any one) can often become stress-filled, money-draining, joy-less days of the year that we just "want to get through." And it is by our own volition that we have refused too many times to allow our holiday celebrations to be the spiritual experience they are meant to be.

This book has been conceived and designed over 30 years as Dr. Bill Thrasher has spoken to thousands of people, helping them realize the spiritual battle that surrounds their celebration of the holidays. Littered with practical thoughts, ideas, experiences, and stories, Putting God Back in the Holidays will help you and your family celebrate holidays and birthdays with biblical truth in mind.Instead of the joy-filled celebrations that we build up in ourminds, the holidays (pick one, any one) can often becomestress-filled, money-draining, joy-less days of the year that wejust "want to get through."      Easter: Is It Pagan?
Publisher: Ralph Woodrow
Author(s): Ralph E. Woodrow

Simply put, this book shows that: "Easter" is not the name of a pagan goddess; Constantine did not start Easter at the Nicene council; the 40 days of Lent did not start in Babylon; Christians who attend sunrise services are not worshipping Baal; eggs and rabbits are not vile, abominable objects! This study shows how many have been victims of misinformation.

Island at the End of the World: The Turbulent History of Easter Island
Publisher: Reaktion Books
Author(s): Steven Roger Fischer

On a long stretch of green coast in the South Pacific, hundreds of enormous, impassive stone heads stand guard against the ravages of time, war, and disease that have attempted over the centuries to conquer Easter Island. Steven Roger Fischer offers the first English-language history of Easter Island in Island at the End of the World, a fascinating chronicle of adversity, triumph, and the enduring monumentality of the island's stone guards.

A small canoe with Polynesians brought the first humans to Easter Island in 700 CE, and when boat travel in the South Pacific drastically decreased around 1500, the Easter Islanders were forced to adapt in order to survive their isolation. Adaptation, Fischer asserts, was a continuous thread in the life of Easter Island: the first European visitors, who viewed the awe-inspiring monolithic busts in 1722, set off hundreds of years of violent warfare, trade, and disease?from the smallpox, wars, and Great Death that decimated the island to the late nineteenth-century Catholic missionaries who tried to "save" it to a despotic Frenchman who declared sole claim of the island and was soon killed by the remaining 111 islanders. The rituals, leaders, and religions of the Easter Islanders evolved with all of these events, and Fischer is just as attentive to the island's cultural developments as he is to its foreign invasions.

Bringing his history into the modern era, Fischer examines the colonization and annexation of Easter Island by Chile, including the Rapanui people's push forcivil rights in 1964 and 1965, by which they gained full citizenship and freedom of movement on the island. As travel to and interest in the island rapidly expand, Island at the End of the World is an essential history of this mysterious site.

Lent and Easter Wisdom From St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi (Lent & Easter Wisdom)
Publisher: Liguori Publications

Although they lived nearly 800 years ago, Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi serve as excellent guides for the modern Lenten journey. Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi abandoned their comfortable lifestyles and embraced lives of poverty, humility, and penance to better follow the call to Christian discipleship. Both saints underwent powerful conversion experiences in their lives. In the course of their conversions, they ignited a movement that reformed the medieval Church and that continues to influence and inspire millions of Christians to this day.

In this book of prayers, letters, poetry, rules of life, and testaments, Francis and Clare express their vision of the Gospel life. Included are numerous themes extremely appropriate for the Lenten and Easter seasons: penance, conversion, self-sacrifice, service, embracing the cross, the humility and charity of Christ, joy, new life, and mission. Through these daily meditations, Scriptural readings, and spiritual exercises, we follow two of the most influential figures in Church history.

Each selected writing is followed by a brief scripture passage, a fitting prayer, and a suggested action-making this book an ideal companion for daily use. The words and example of these two great saints will inspire readers faithfully to follow Christ to the cross so that, together with them, they might experience the joy and new life of Easter.
