In the 1930s and 1940s Joes worked with musicians such as Charlie Johnson bandleader Charlie Johnson , the Savoy Bearcats , Fess Williams , Chick Webb 1933 34 , Sam Wooding , Claude Hopkins , Willie Bryant , Teddy Hill , Don Redman 1936 38 , Erskine Hawkins , Duke Ellington 1946 , Jimmie Lunceford , Lucky Millinder and Sy Oliver . He soloed sparingly after his time with Chick Webb. He played lead trumpet with the Count Basie Orchestra 1952 57 , which gave him some fame due to his one handed solo style of playing, but Jones was rarely featured. However, Jones was featured as a member of the Quincy Jones group, The Jones Boys 56 58 , a session conceived by Leonard Feather featuring a number of musicians named Jones, though none of them were related. From the 1940s Jones did extensive work as a studio musician. He toured with Woody Herman 1959 , George Shearing s big band ca. 1960 and with an orchestra accompanying Nat King Cole 1961 64 . He taught school in his native county to work his way through college . He was admitted to the bar law bar in 1834, and later fought with the 1st Tennessee in the Seminole Wars Second Seminole War . He was a member of the Tennessee General Assembly state legislature from 1841 to 1847, prior to his receiving the nomination of the United States Whig Party Whig Party for governor of Tennessee. Jones worked with Fletcher Henderson from 1934 to 1936, then recorded and toured with Fats Waller from 1936 to 1941. Concomitantly he also appeared on record with Gene Sedric , Don Redman , Lionel Hampton , and Una Mae Carlisle . Following his time with Waller, he played with Stuff Smith , Eddie South , Claude Hopkins , Hazel Scott , and Don Byas , in addition to further work with Sedric and Redman. In the 1950s he worked with Sidney Bechet , Wilbur DeParis 1954 55 , and Doc Cheatham .
