A Democratic Party United States Democrat , she currently serves as a member of the New York State Assembly from the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn , which primarily includes the neighborhoods of Flatbush, Brooklyn Flatbush and Midwood . A Brooklyn native and a graduate of Brooklyn College Assemblywoman Jacobs was originally elected to the then 43rd District in 1978. Jacobs faced a difficult re election in 1982 after the New York State Assembly Assembly was redistricting redistricted in a reapportionment plan designed to increase African American and Hispanic representation in the Legislature . Jacobs ended up in the new 42nd District where she prevailed and has remained there ever since. She currently serves as the Assistant Speaker of the New York State Assembly . She previously served as Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore Pro Tem and Chairwoman of Majority Program Committee as well as the Social Services Committee. Positions that she occupied for two and twelve years respectively. In the past she has also served as the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Oversight, Analysis and Investigation and the Task Force on Food, Farm and Nutrition Policy. She was a pupil of the Bloomsbury School of Art in London and won the Queen s scholarship, later studying in Rome under Cammerano and Vertunni. In 1884, after marrying in Sussex Burr H. Nicholls, she removed to the United States and eventually settled in New York City . Besides identifying herself prominently with the New York Water Color Club , Mrs. Nicholls became a member of the American Society of Miniature Painters and of the American Water Color Society and served as coeditor of Palette and Brush . Her work is strong, brilliant, and individual. Among the best examples are her Venice Venetian water colors and her illustrations for William Dean Howells Howells Venetian Life 1866 editions to 1907 . Together they made up the entire 1948 Winter Olympics 1948 Olympic Women s Alpine team for Canada. The Wurtele twins were born in 1922 in the province of Quebec . They began skiing at age five when their father strapped two planks of wood onto their feet and pushed them out the front door which happened to be on top of Mount Royal in Montreal . The twins never stopped skiing. By age 11 they had skied off the senior ski jump on Mount Royal women still do not compete in Ski Jumping at the Olympic games . They were Canada s first women s Olympic alpine ski team and competed in Canada and the United States from 1942 to 1948 representing the Penguin Ski Club. They were married in a double ceremony in November of 1948. They continued to compete through to 1959 even after they had children.
