Omakau grew when the Otago Central Railway was opened in 1904. It is bounded by the Kakanui Range to the north and the Rock and Pillar Range to the southeast. It has a harsh, dry climate, ranging from over 30 C in mid summer to 15 C in mid winter. The region is sparsely populated, with the largest centres being Ranfurly, New Zealand Ranfurly , Naseby, New Zealand Naseby , Omakau , and Ophir, New Zealand Ophir . Part of the Canterbury Otago tussock grasslands the land surrounding the plain is hilly, with many outcrops of rock which also break up the plain in places. The scenery between Omakau and Ranfurly appeared in Peter Jackson s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy The Lord of the Rings film trilogy as the location for many of the scenes set in Rohan . During the 1860s the region was one of the sites of the Central Otago goldrush , and relics from that era can still be seen around the towns of Kyeburn , Naseby, New Zealand Naseby , and Saint Bathans, New Zealand St. Bathans . Sheep farming is the major source of income. The area is closely associated with the sport of curling . Naseby has the only indoor curling rink and the only natural luge track in the Southern Hemisphere. It is wholly two lane and passes through some of the most extreme climatic regions in New Zealand. The highway is known colloquially as The Pigroot .     Image Ophir Post Office.jpg thumb 230px right Ophir Post and Telegraph Office Ophir is a small settlement in Central Otago , New Zealand , located between Alexandra, New Zealand Alexandra and Ranfurly, New Zealand Ranfurly close to the east bank of the Manuherikia River . The settlement of Omakau is located on the opposite bank, three kilometres to the northwest. Ophir was originally known as Blacks, when gold was discovered in Central Otago in 1863 Ophir s population grew to over 1000 as it became the commercial and social centre of the district. It was renamed Ophir at this time which was where King Solomon obtained the gold to sheath the Temple in Jerusalem , and is thus the place name of the legendary King Solomon s Goldmines . Today, with a current population of only 50, the town is also known for the many original buildings still surviving including the restored Post and Telegraph Office, the 1895 Courthouse, and the 1870s Police Station. The area commonly known as Central Otago includes both the Central Otago District and the Queenstown Lakes District to the west.
