Alexiewicz norm
In mathematics &mdash specifically, in integral integration theory &mdash the Alexiewicz norm is an integral norm mathematics norm associated to the Henstock&ndash Kurzweil integral . The Alexiewicz norm turns the space of Henstock&ndash Kurzweil integrable functions into a topological vector space that is barrelled space barrelled but not complete space complete . The Alexiewicz norm is named after the Poland Polish mathematician Andrzej Alexiewicz , who introduced it in 1948. Definition Let HK R denote the space of all functions f R R that have finite Henstock&ndash Kurzweil integral. Define the Alexiewicz semi norm of f HK R by math f sup left left int I f right I subseteq mathbb R text is an interval right . math This defines a semi norm on HK R if functions that are equal Lebesgue measure Lebesgue almost everywhere are identified, then this procedure defines a bona fide norm on the quotient space quotient of HK R by the equivalence relation of equality almost everywhere. Note that the only constant function f R R that is integrable is the one with constant value zero. Properties The Alexiewicz norm endows HK R with a topology that is barrelled but incomplete. The Alexiewicz norm as defined above is norm mathematics Properties equivalent to the norm defined by math f sup x in mathbb R left int infty x f right . math The complete metric space completion of HK R with respect to the Alexiewicz norm is often denoted A R and is a subspace of the space of Distribution mathematics tempered distribution s, the dual of Schwartz space . More precisely, A R consists of those tempered distributions that are distributional derivative s of functions in the collection math left F colon mathbb R to mathbb R , left , F text is continuous ... x F infty . math The translation operator is continuous with respect to the Alexiewicz norm. In mathematical analysis , the uniform norm mathematics norm assigns to real number real or complex number complex valued bounded functions f defined on a set S the non negative number math f infty f infty,S sup left , left f x right x in S , right . math This norm is also called the supremum norm, the Chebyshev norm, or the infinity norm. If we allow unbounded functions, this formula does not yield a norm or metric mathematics metric in a strict sense, although the obtained so called metric mathematics Related concepts and alternative axiom systems extended metric still allows one to define a topology on the function space in question. If f is a continuous function on a closed interval , or more generally a compact space compact set, then it is bounded and the supremum in the above definition is attained by the Weierstrass extreme value theorem , so we can replace the supremum by the maximum. In this case, the norm is also called the maximum norm . Field norm
refimprove date December 2010 In mathematics , the field norm is a mapping defined in field theory mathematics field theory , to map elements of a larger field into a smaller one. Formal definitions 1. Let K be a field and L a finite field extension extension and hence an algebraic extension of K . Multiplication by , an element of L , is a K linear transformation math m alpha L to L . math That is, L is viewed as a vector space over K , and m sub sub is a linear transformation of this vector space into itself. The norm N sub L K sub is defined as the determinant of this linear transformation. Properties of the determinant imply that the norm belongs to K and N sub L K sub N sub L K sub N sub L K sub so that the norm, when considered on non zero elements, is a group homomorphism from the multiplicative group of L to that of K . 2. If L K is a Galois extension , the norm N sub L K sub of an element of L is the product of all the Conjugate element field theory conjugates g of , for g in the Galois group G of L K . Example The field norm from the complex number s to the real numbers sends x iy to x sup 2 sup y sup 2 sup . This corresponds to the Galois group having two elements, the identity element which sends x iy to itself, and complex conjugation, which sends x iy to x iy . Further properties The norm of an algebraic integer is again an integer, because it is equal ... K sub I i.e. the cardinality of this finite ring . Hence this norm of an ideal is always a positive integer. When I is a principal ideal O sub K sub then N I is equal to the absolute value of the norm to Q of , for an algebraic integer.
