Use dmy dates date March 2012 Use British English date March 2012 Dudley Charles Carew born 1903 died on 22 March 1981 at Cuckfield , Sussex aged 77 was an England English journalist, writer, poet and film critic. He was a special correspondent of The Times in the 1920s and 1930s, and reported on cricket matches for the paper. From 1945 until his retirement in 1963 he was the paper s film critic. Almost all his articles for The Times were written anonymously, as was the paper s policy until William Rees Mogg became its editor in 1967. John Arlott wrote of him It was, perhaps, unfortunate for Dudley Carew that his entry into cricket writing should have coincided with the rise of Neville Cardus . If there had never been a Cardus, how highly should we have ranked one who wrote At the other end George Gunn Gunn batted much as a man potters about a garden, digging his fork into a bed with an abstracted and absent minded air... Arlott also rated highly his cricket novel, Son of Grief , saying It has its darknesses, but it is convincing, and its characters are rounded and credible. The title, as with those of his other cricket books, was taken from the poetry of A.E. Housman . Housman s A Shropshire Lad contains the lines Now in Maytime to the wicket Out I march with bat and pad See the son of grief at cricket Trying to be glad. Some of Carew s own poetry appeared in Selections from Modern Poets , two anthologies compiled by J. C. Squire and published in 1921 and 1924. 1. Mabley & Carew

refimprove date October 2008 Mabley & Carew Department Store was a prominent department store in Cincinnati, Ohio . The store traced its roots to 1877, when Detroit merchants C. R. Mabley and Joseph T. Carew , en route to Memphis, Tennessee Memphis , were stranded in Cincinnati by a late train and wound up going into business in the heart of what was then a booming river city. Having missed their connection, they walked around town and reached Fountain Square, saw a For Rent sign, and decided that 66 Fifth Street was a fine place for a store. Mabley and Carew was the first store in Cincinnati to adopt full page newspaper ads, to give elaborate Christmas performances, and to set up the Arbor Day custom. The Mabley and Carew building was once illuminated by 10,000 lights that glimmered opposite Fountain Square. The company was owned by a joint partnership of Messrs Mabley and Carew but managed by Carew. After Mabley s death in 1885 Carew became sole owner of the business. Carew himself died in 1914 and was succeeded as Company President by his first cousin Bolton Stretch Armstrong 1872 1954 who ran the company for the next 37 years. ref http www.bgsu.edu colleges library cac ms page53772.html ref In 1929 the Carew Building, a nearby office block also built by Carew, was demolished and replaced by Cincinnati s landmark Carew Tower , completed in 1930 after only 17 months work. ref http www.emporis.com application ?nav building&id 122028&lng 3 ref This complex was to be the new home to the main Mabley & Carew department store from 1930 to 1960, when the business was purchased by Allied Stores . By 1962 the company had moved the store across Fifth Street into what had been Rollman s Department Store , renamed the Mabley and Carew Building. In 1978, Dayton, Ohio based Elder Beerman department stores purchased Mabley & Carew. All 4 Cincinnati stores, including the Fifth and Vine ... 26041855 Joseph T. 1. Joseph T. Carew

Joseph Thomas Carew 1848 1914 was an American department store owner. Carew was born in Peterboro, Ontario on Jan 2, 1848, the elder son of Robert Shapland Carew and Euphemia Gordon Carew, a well to do Irish family working for the British government in Canada. After school in Peterboro and Toronto he decided to move to America and became an American citizen, joining in 1869 the clothing firm of English immigrant C. R. Mabley . He quickly rose to be manager of the Detroit branch and was then offered by Mabley a partnership in a new store, for which Cincinnati was selected. He thus in 1877 became the manager and co partner with Mabley of the successful business of Mabley & Carew and organised the construction of a new six storey department store at the corner of Fifth and Vine Streets. On Mabley s death in 1885 he became sole proprietor. He married on August 10th 1877 Alice E Stewart, daughter of a Detroit shipowner. They had two children, Robert and Elaine. Robert also worked for the store. He was a prominent Freemason and active in public service and was presented with the Golden Key of the City by the Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed a Trustee of the Cincinnati Southern Railroad in 1905. He was a loyal Republican and a three time Presidential Elector from Ohio and chairman of the Ohio Electoral College. He died at his home in Walnut Hills near Cincinnati on Dec 11, 1914 at the age of 65 and his cousin Bolton Stretch Armstrong took over as Company President. Joseph was buried in Spring Grove cemetery, his name perpetuated by one of Cincinnati s tallest buildings, the Carew Tower , built in 1931 over the site of his office block, the Carew Building .
